GOP Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming on Thursday evening issued members of her party a stark warning over their continued support of former President Donald Trump.
“I say this to my Republican colleagues who are defending the indefensible: there will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain,” Cheney, vice chair of the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, said during the panel’s first hearing.
The lawmaker’s comments come as she has been largely ostracized by fellow Republicans over her criticism of Trump in the aftermath of the Capitol attack. She voted with all Democrats and nine other Republicans to impeach Trump on a charge of “incitement of insurrection.” Top congressional Republicans, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, removed Cheney from her GOP leadership position last year.
Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is among just a handful of high-profile Republicans who have repeatedly spoken out against Trump since he left office. She is also one of just two Republicans, along with Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, who sits on the nine-member January 6 panel.
The committee is holding a series of hearings this month to reveal its findings and show how Trump oversaw an effort to overturn the election and stay in power, Cheney said Thursday.
Trump has fiercely rebuked Cheney in public statements and has endorsed her primary challenger, Harriet Hageman, in an effort to oust the incumbent lawmaker from Congress. Cheney is running to hold on to her seat in the August 16 primary.
