Radio City is getting a huge rebrand

Radio City, the iconic station, is set for a big shake-up as it will be rebranded under a new name.

Bauer Media, who own the station, confirmed that Liverpool’s Radio City will be known as Hits Radio Liverpool from April. The programme director for the Hits Radio Network, Gary Stein, issued a statement about this change. He said: “We are passionate about radio and the unique mix of companionship, information and entertainment that it offers and want to make sure it thrives in years to come.

“The audio landscape has evolved dramatically in recent years and, thanks to advances in digital listening, there is even more choice for audiences than ever before.” He added: “By transforming into this nationally recognised brand, we’re really excited by the potential that the station has to grow. Of course, all the local news and information that we know you value remains, along with the music that you love to soundtrack your day to. It’s Radio City but with a new name!'”

This is the latest change for the station, which has been broadcast from the Radio City tower since 2000. Last year, it was announced that the breakfast show would merge with sister station Rock FM. Leanne Campbell has hosted the new show alongside Joel Ross since January.

The Radio City tower has become an iconic staple of Liverpool’s landscape. It broadcasts to Merseyside, Cheshire and parts of north Wales. In data published in September 2023, the station reached a weekly audience of 265,000 listeners. The station is set in St John’s Beacon in Liverpool city centre.

It was built in 1969 and opened by Queen Elizabeth II. The Radio City tower stands as the second tallest free-standing building in Liverpool and the 32nd tallest in the UK. Radio City has operated from the tower since 2000, with its sister station, Greatest Hits Radio also broadcasts from the building.

When it first opened, the tower was home to a luxury 5 star revolving restaurant. It went under refurbishment in 1999 before opening as the radio station, at a cost of £5 million. The tower has been known to sway in heavy winds and is also a tourist attraction as visitors can take an elevator to the top of the tower to look over the city’s landscape.

Notable past presenters for Radio City include comedian John Bishop, screenwriter Alan Bleasdale and radio star Pete Price. In November 2023, it was announced Radio City’s weekday breakfast show – the station’s sole remaining local programme – would be merged with Lancashire’s Rock FM.

The joint breakfast show continues to air from the Radio City Tower, presented by Leanne Campbell and Rock FM presenter Joel Ross. Radio City also retains local news and traffic bulletins, alongside its own separate branding.
