  • Liverpool’s injury woes have taken another turn for the worse after versatile star James Milner was forced off against Brighton.

The 34-year-old, who has been forced into a wide range of positions due to the club’s mounting list of absentees, was himself the victim of a strain this weekend.

Milner went down seemingly holding his hamstring in the 73rd minute of the clash on the south coast.

Jurgen Klopp has made his disapproval clear with his team’s hectic fixture scheduling in recent days – and Liverpool have been rocked by an ever-increasing number of players consigned to the treatment table.

Key stars Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Fabinho have all been sidelined this season, with the towering Dutchman facing a race against time to be fit before the end of the term.

Klopp slammed broadcasters this week for the hectic run of fixtures, and even went as far as labelling the toll on his players as a ‘crime’.

He had said: ‘I’m afraid to say but I think it (running out of steam) could happen not only to us but to other teams as well.

‘You (BT Sport) my special friends ask us to go on Saturday at 12.30pm, which is nearly a crime to be honest. It has nothing to do with the game tonight but congratulations for that.’

Curtis Jones was thrown into the fray in place of Milner with Liverpool narrowly leading 1-0 at the Amex.

Diogo Jota struck in the 60th minute after a superb solo run to hand the visitors the advantage, either side of efforts from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane that were ruled out for offside.

But Pascal Gross capitalised on last-gasp drama with a penalty deep inside stoppage time to force Liverpool to settle for a point.

Referee Stuart Attwell pointed to the spot after a lengthy check following Andy Robertson’s clip on Danny Welbeck.
