Liverpool vs Newcastle LIVE: Premier League latest score and goal updates as Alexander Isak makes debut

Isak #Isak

Liverpool will be keen to build on their 9-0 demolition of Bournemouth when they welcome Newcastle United in the Premier League tonight. Jurgen Klopp’s men romped home against the Cherries on Saturday with Luis Diaz, Roberto Firmino, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harvey Elliott and Fabio Calvalho all on the scoresheet.

The manner of Liverpool’s victory quieted some early season criticism after the Red’s drew with Fulham and Crystal Palace before losing to Manchester United. Mo Salah had an uncharacteristically mellow game, and missed a couple of good chances, so will be hungry for goals against Eddie Howe’s side this evening.

Newcastle come into the match ahead of Liverpool in the Premier League table after Allan Saint-Maximin’s late equaliser rescued a point at Wolves to maintain their unbeaten start. They’ve taken six points from their opening four games – one win, three draws – and have strengthened the squad with new arrivals. Chief among them is the Magpies record signing Alexander Isak who could make his debut for the club tonight.

Follow all the action from Anfield as Liverpool take on Newcastle United:

    21:58 , Michael Jones

FABIO CARVALHO! He’s won it for Liverpool with the final kick of the game!

    Story continues

Liverpool swing the corner into the box and flick it on to Mo Salah. He heads an effort at Nick Pope who keeps it out. The ball comes back to Salah but bounces over his head and drops to 20-year-old Carvalho who boots it into the back of the net!

    Fantastic drama!

    90+6’ – Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

    21:57 , Michael Jones

Chance! Liverpool punt the ball up the pitch and find Firmino who slides the ball into the box for Salah. He shoots but Burn deflects the ball behind for a corner!

Liverpool will have one last chance.

    90+3’ – Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

    21:54 , Michael Jones

Nick Pope clings on to a Liverpool cross and goes to ground under pressure from Virgil van Dijk. He stays on the ground and wants the medical staff to come on.

There doesn’t seem anything wrong with him and this is a major time-wasting tactic.

    90’ – Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

    21:51 , Michael Jones

Five minutes of added time to play. Newcastle are managing this game well but there’s still time for some late drama.

    Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

    21:46 , Michael Jones

87’ – Close! A cross from Milner comes to Tsimikas who can’t turn the ball towards goal. Instead it bobbles out of the box and sits up well for Fabinho who drills a decent effort at the far top corner and just puts it wide!

    Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

    21:44 , Michael Jones

84’ – Tsimikas curls the free kick into the middle of the box and find Fabinho but he whips his headed effort over the crossbar. Elliot Anderson replaces Miguel Almiron for Newcastle.

    81’ – Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

    21:42 , Michael Jones

All the Liverpool fans are stood up, these are nervous moments for them. The Reds could do with a win here but time is running out.

Gomez fizzes the ball over to the left wing where Tsimikas dinks the ball to Carvalho. He shields it from Willock who bundles into him and gifts Liverpool a free kick.

    78’ – Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

    21:40 , Michael Jones

Constant pressure from Liverpool sees them attack from the right but Joelinton dispossesses Elliott. Liverpool get it back and switch the play.

Carvalho flicks one on but can’t reach Salah and Newcastle’s clearance get recycled again. Diaz collects it on the left, cuts inside and shoots forcing Pope into a save that he palms over the bar!

    75’ – Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

    21:35 , Michael Jones

Diaz fizzes a square pass across to Elliott which could prove dangerous for Newcastle if it wasn’t for Burn leaping into action and intercepting the ball with a lunging slide.

He works it away and Newcastle sweep forward. Their attack is cut short thanks to a foul from Fabinho.

    72’ – Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

    21:32 , Michael Jones

Chris Wood has come on for Newcastle replacing Alexander Isak who immediately puts an ice pack on his leg which isn’t the best sign considering his fine debut tonight.

Dan Burn gives away a free kick but he’s there to meet and clear Milner’s delivery into the box.

    69’ – Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

    21:30 , Michael Jones

Harvey Elliott tries to weaves his way into the box from the right but holds onto the ball too long and runs it out of play for a goal kick.

Klopp is prepping a triple change. Jordan Henderson, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold are hooked with Kostas Tsimikas, Fabio Carvalho and James Milner replacing them.

    64’ – Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

    21:25 , Michael Jones

Can Liverpool go on to win the game now? Goals bring confidence and Liverpool need that more than anything at the minute.

Luis Diaz drives at Trippier and fizzes a cross over towards Mo Salah. Burn gets in the way and manages to boot the ball clear. These are worrying signs for the visitors.

    61’ GOAL! – Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle (Firmino)⚽️

    21:21 , Michael Jones

Liverpool are level! It’s a simple yet pleasing move starting from the back, the Reds work the ball over to Mo Salah who drives up the right side of the pitch and pulls the ball back to Roberto Firmino.

He finishes it with an ease and confidence befitting his form and Anfield goes wild.

    60’ – Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle

    21:20 , Michael Jones

Save! Van Dijk dinks a clever ball over the top and finds Salah but he fails to bring the ball under control and it rolls to Diaz. He’s blocked off but the ball comes to Elliott who drills a low shot at goal and forces Pope into a sharp save low to his right.

    57’ – Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle

    21:18 , Michael Jones

There’s something off about this Liverpool team. Tey’res not flowing and working as we all know they can which must be mightily infuriating for Jurgen Klopp.

When they move the ball quickly the crowd gets excited but once again their play in the final third is poor. Robertson’s cross comes straight into the arms of Pope.

    54’ – Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle

    21:15 , Michael Jones

Disallowed goal! Henderson and Longstaff have a barny in the Newcastle penalty area which results in a free kick for the visitors. Pope sends it over to Targett who threads it down the line and plays Isak in behind Gomez.

He carries the ball into the box, sits Robertson down then calmly guides his shot past Alisson only for the offside flag to go up.

    51’ – Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle

    21:13 , Michael Jones

Isak gives Willock a clap of thanks for the thought as he chips the ball into the box from the right wing under pressure from two or three Liverpool men.

Alisson plucks the ball off the nose of the striker but he’s getting himself into good areas.

    48’ – Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle

    21:09 , Michael Jones

Brilliant from Trippier. An aerial ball comes over the top to Luis Diaz who knocks it past Trippier and gets into the box. The Newcastle defender times his lunging tackle expertly and sends the ball out for a corner before Diaz can shoot.

Robertson swings the corner into the box but Lascelles is up highest and flicks it away.

    Second half: Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle

    21:06 , Michael Jones

Kick off: Newcastle get the match restarted but give the ball away to Liverpool from the kick off.

The Reds work the ball over to Salah who spies Pope off his line and attempts to lob the goalkeeper but gets it all wrong and fires the effort out of play.

    HT Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle

    21:02 , Michael Jones

Jurgen Klopp was not a happy bunny in the first half. He was raging at the officials, at his players, at the wind… probably. Liverpool have conceded first again just as they have done in almost every game of the season so far.

The only exception is their 9-0 victory over Bournemouth.

    HT Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle

    20:55 , Michael Jones

Alexander Isak opens his account with Newcastle to give them the lead at half-time against Liverpool. Is there a way back for Jurgen Klopp’s men?

    Half-time: Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle

    20:49 , Michael Jones

45+4’ – Pressure on Newcastle right at the end of the half but the Magpies deal with it well. Liverpool just aren’t clicking in the final third.

They’ve won a load of corners but they aren’t translating into chances at goal.

The whistle goes for half-time and Newcastle lead at the break.

    45’ – Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle

    20:46 , Michael Jones

Four minutes of added time to play. Trent Alexander-Arnold delivers another corner ball but this one lands in the hands of Nick Pope.

Liverpool are growing frustrated out there.

    41’ – Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle

    20:42 , Michael Jones

Trippier nods an aerial ball behind for a Liverpool corner and gives Andy Robertson the chance to swing in the ball. It’s well defended but knocked out for a repeat.

The second corner is sent in towards Firmino but again Newcastle are prepared and work it clear.

    38’ GOAL! – Liverpool 0-1 Newcastle (Isak)⚽️

    20:39 , Michael Jones

Newcastle take the lead! Trent Alexander Arnold loses the ball and the visitors work it down the right side. Alexander Isak lays the ball off to Sean Longstaff then sprints into the box.

Longstaff threads it back to him and he blasts a right-footed effort past Alisson to put his team in front!

Great debut for the new man.

    35’ – Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

    20:36 , Michael Jones

Chance! Liverpool finally get the crowd going with a counter-attacking move that sees Roberto Firmino slide a lovely pass into the right side of the box for Luis Diaz.

He could roll it back to Salah and set up a better chance but decides to go for goal after taking the ball around Nick Pope but he smokes his effort high and wide.

    Better from the Reds though.

    32’ – Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

    20:34 , Michael Jones

There’s an appeal for a handball against Dan Burn in the Newcastle box but nothing comes from it. Newcastle then work the ball to the other end of the pitch and Joe Gomez gives away another free kick.

This one is swung in by Matt Targett and drops to Kieran Trippier. He recycle’s the ball and picks out Alexander Isak who flicks it on into the path of Alisson.

    28’ – Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

    20:29 , Michael Jones

Newcastle win a free kick just outside the penalty area Kieran Trippier is left to take the set piece. He slips just as he whips a shot at goal and although he sneaks it around the wall he can’t beat Alisson.

    25’ – Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

    20:26 , Karl Matchett

Almiron gets the better of Robertson twice but Liverpool this time defend well through the centre. Elliott sparks a counter move which ends in a corner after Robertson overlaps. Gomez ends up shooting but his effort is blocked, then he fouls Isak.

    22’ – Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

    20:23 , Karl Matchett

Goals elsewhere around the league: City are 3-0 up against Forest, a hat-trick for Haaland at half-time. Bournemouth and Wolves are 0-0.

Spurs have just taken the lead at West Ham, a Kehrer own goal, while Gabriel Jesus has Arsenal one up against Villa.

At Anfield it’s still all the pressure from the home side in open play, but nothing too testing for Nick Pope to deal with thus far.

    18’ – Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

    20:21 , Karl Matchett

Plenty of possession for the home side but no big openings yet. Newcastle on the other hand are playing direct balls which are causing a few issues.

Fraser bends one over the bar, then Diaz attacks the defence again, leaves one defender on his backside and tries a cutback to Salah which is just cleared.

    14’ – Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

    20:15 , Karl Matchett

Joelinton pokes a ball through the Liverpool defence but Alisson reacts quicker than anyone in a black and white shirt.

Diaz needs a bit of treatment for a head injury but is fine to continue.

Henderson clips a cross into the area but it’s easy for Pope. The home fans are unhappy about the amount of time being taken over goal kicks so far.

    9’ – Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

    20:11 , Karl Matchett

Clash of knees between Diaz and Lascelles and the Newcastle man comes off worst. He isn’t happy that the Colombian arrived a split-second late. Liverpool keep pushing forward and Salah beats Targett, but the Magpies have numbers back and clear.

Isak leads the counter and fires in his first shot from outside the box, but it’s well over the bar.

    5’ – Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

    20:07 , Karl Matchett

Isak makes an early run in behind but the ball towards him isn’t accurate. Fraser looks to run beyond Alexander-Arnold but the right-back wins the battle.

A quick switch sees Diaz attack the left again but once more the cross is cleared, this time by Willock. Lots of speed to go end to end in a flash from both sides in these early stages.

    2’ – Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

    20:03 , Karl Matchett

Liverpool quickly onto the front foot and looking to play in Newcastle’s penalty box. A good noise inside Anfield early on.

Robertson and Diaz combine down the left but his attempted shot is blocked by Trippier, who will face a busy evening no doubt.

Salah then almost gets on the end of a cross – he’ll be looking for a goal tonight after missing two chances in the 9-0 rout.

    Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

    20:00 , Karl Matchett

    Kick-off at Anfield!

The gauntlet has been put down already by Man City who are 2-0 up against Forest. Can the Reds respond or will Newcastle continue their unbeaten run?

Victory for either of these sides could lift them into the top six tonight, depending on how results go elsewhere of course.

Early goal in the Premier League – no surprise, and no positive for Liverpool.

Erling Haaland has Man City ahead against Forest.

Arsenal and Villa are still goalless but it’s fiesty and aggressive there. Bournemouth and Wolves are also still goalless.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has had his say ahead of kick-off, with some of that unusual feeling of disappointment having lifted from Anfield following that massive weekend win.

There have of course still been questions over whether any more transfers will happen, but it’s full focus on the pitch tonight.

Obviously Isak is the team is the main talking point for the Magpies, but he is in among several absences.

Centre-back pairing Botman and Schar are on the bench in a surprise move from Eddie Howe, with each of Guimaraes, Wilson and Saint-Maximin very big losses from the first-choice XI.

There’s plenty of height at the back though with Burn, Targett and now Lascelles all in there.

    Liverpool vs Newcastle latest news

    19:09 , Karl Matchett

Let’s take a look at the home side first.

All the same as expected in the line-up, but the big boost for Klopp will be having two seniors finally back available: Joel Matip joins Curtis Jones among the subs, boosting at least the boss’ options off the bench. For a couple of games now it had been Tsimikas, Milner, Carvalho – himself a teen – and then a few kids and reserves.

With Jota, Thiago and Kelleher all expected in training in the coming days, the injury crisis is just starting to ease.

    Liverpool vs Newcastle confirmed line-ups

    19:02 , Karl Matchett

Team news is in! The Reds are unsurprisingly unchanged after a 9-0 weekend win.

Eddie Howe throws Isak straight into the XI, with Targett and Lascelles also in with changes in defence.

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Elliott, Henderson, Salah, Firmino, Diaz.

Newcastle XI: Pope, Trippier, Lascelles, Burn, Targett, Longstaff, Willock, Joelinton, Almiron, Fraser, Isak

Liverpool vs Newcastle team news imminent

    18:57 , Karl Matchett

Full line-ups are on the way.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has to choose between James Milner and Jordan Henderson in midfield, as long as Harvey Elliott has shown no ill effects after coming off at the weekend. Joel Matip is back in training but not too many changes are likely after such a huge win.

Newcastle might be without Allan Saint-Maximin, while Callum Wilson is out. That could mean another start for Chris Wood, unless Isak is thrown straight in. Bruno Guimaraes is still out in midfield, so Sean Longstaff is likely to start again. Jacob Murphy or Ryan Fraser are the replacements if Saint-Maximin cannot play.

    Liverpool vs Newcastle latest news

    18:52 , Karl Matchett

The clubs have both been relatively active in the transfer market, though it’s probably fair to say many onlookers expected perhaps another deal or two from both – at least on the incoming side.

Darwin Nunez was the big signing of the summer for Liverpool but he’s sitting out the third of a three-match suspension tonight after an up-and-down start to life at Anfield. Calvin Ramsey has been injured all season so far. Fabio Carvalho is the other addition and the youngster has impressed off the bench, scoring against Bournemouth at the weekend.

Newcastle brought in a new first-choice goalkeeper in Nick Pope, who has been excellent so far, with Matt Targett’s loan from Aston Villa made permanent. Sven Botman also joined in defence and now the aforementioned Isak is their big addition of the window on a club record fee.

The season so far for both these clubs:

Liverpool didn’t have the greatest start, drawing with both Fulham and Crystal Palace before suffering defeat at Manchester United. They bounced back in style though, smashing Bournemouth 9-0 at the weekend to equal the Premier League record margin of victory – and leading Scott Parker to be fired from the Cherries.

They sit 12th, with five points from four games.

Newcastle are two places and one point ahead of the Reds, having won on the opening day of the season against Nottingham Forest. Since then it has been three draws for the Magpies, against Brighton, Man City and most recently Wolves.

Alexander Isak receives work visa ahead of Newcastle debut

    18:40 , Karl Matchett

The Times’ Martin Hardy reported just a couple of hours ago that new Newcastle United signing Alexander Isak has received his visa from the Home Office – meaning he’s clear to feature in tonight’s game.

The deadline was 75 minutes before kick-off, Eddie Howe confirmed recently, so the Swedish forward is set to be involved at Anfield.

Whether that’s in the starting XI or off the bench, we’ll find out at 7pm.

‘We will try everything’: Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool’s hunt for a midfielder

    18:30 , Karl Matchett

Jurgen Klopp would prefer Liverpool to “risk a bit more” in the transfer market but he ultimately accepts their situation as the search for a midfielder goes to the wire.

Liverpool’s outlay on Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay this summer may end up costing them just north of £100million but they will recoup around three quarters of that on outgoings.

While Klopp is seeking to bolster his squad in the middle of the park before the transfer window closes on Thursday night, the Reds manager recognises the decision is out of his hands.

More from the boss on the Reds’ late search for recruits:

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson facing hamstring injury ‘setback’

    18:20 , Karl Matchett

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has expressed his frustration with the hamstring injury that has stalled his strong start to the new Premier League campaign.

Wilson limped off midway through his side’s 3-3 draw with Manchester City earlier this month and is expected to remain on the sidelines for at least two more weeks.

The 30-year-old told BBC Radio 5 Live’s The Footballer’s Football Podcast: “I have a had a little setback – disappointing because I felt like I had found my form and rhythm.”

Wilson scored in his side’s opening day of the season win over Nottingham Forest and again against City before hobbling off after 70 minutes.

Chris Wood took his place in the line-up against Wolves at the weekend, while Alexander Isak has since been added to the squad after signing from Real Sociedad.

He added: “It’s frustrating because you do everything right – the ultimate professional.

“There are probably not many people in the dressing room that are more professional than myself – the way I eat, the way I sleep, the way I recover.

“That’s the most frustrating thing – you’re putting your heart and soul into making sure you stay there. A little setback – it’s fine – but I’ve had to put it into perspective.”

Hello and welcome to The Independent’s coverage of Liverpool vs Newcastle from Anfield. The Reds come into the game full of confidence after their impressive display against Bouremouth that saw Luis Diaz, Roberto Firmino, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harvey Elliott and Fabio Calvalho all contribute goals in a 9-0 victory.

It was Liverpool’s first win of the season following draws with Fulham and Crystal Palace as well as a defeat to Manchester United. Jurgen Klopp will be hoping for more of the same tonight but Newcastle will prove a much tough test.

Eddie Howe’s men are unbeaten in this campaign though they have only picked up one win – against Nottingham Forest. Still, impressive draws against Brighton and Manchester City before Allan Saint-Maximin’s last minute equaliser versus Wolves sees the Magpies start the night ahead of Liverpool in the table and they would very much like to stay there.

New record siging Alexander Isak could make his debut for the club and they’ll be hoping he hits the ground running in front of goal.
