Liverpool: Ray Houghton’s reaction to Jurgen Klopp’s departure

Former Liverpool midfielder Ray Houghton says the departure of Jurgen Klopp will be “absolutely huge” for the club.

The German announced his shock decision to step down as manager at the end of the season on Friday.

“I was there for the midweek game – the second leg of the semi-final – and he was first pumping with the fans,” Houghton told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“There was no sign whatsoever that he was going to make the decision that he’s made.

“Obviously it’s absolutely huge. What he’s done for this club in his time in charge has been nothing short of phenomenal. To get them back winning the league, reaching major finals, getting the pride back in the football club, the joy at playing for Liverpool, the supporters.

“It’s been incredible and the football they’ve played under him has been a joy to watch. It’s going to be one hell of a pair of shoes to fill when he leaves.

“You can’t speak highly enough about what he’s done and what he’s brought to the city, the belief, the pride of being a Scouser. He was true to his word – when he came in he said he’d win a title in the next four years.

“Everything he has done has been for the good of the club and he’s been an absolutely sensational personality and a great manager.”
