Liverpool player ratings as Marko Grujic and Diogo Jota impress despite Carabao Cup defeat to Arsenal

Grujic #Grujic

Adrian 7

Did well to smother one from Nketiah first half and even better stop from Holding after interval. Very unlucky with the winning Arsenal penalty in the shoot-out.

Neco Williams 7

Better than against Lincoln last week and enjoyed his tussle with Pepe. More composed in possession, too. Stuck to his task second half.

Rhys Williams 7

Lost his man in the area during one Arsenal attack but calm on the ball when required and some good clearing headers. Grew in confidence in second half.

Virgil van Dijk 7

Effortlessly organised the defensive back line and didn’t mess about with his clearances. Drew good save from Leno second half. Subbed.

James Milner 8

Returning to left-back for one night only, saw plenty of action and never shy to get forward or stuck in, although slightly quieter second half. Great engine.

Marko Grujic 8

Wide with one early effort and covered plenty of ground to plug the defensive gaps in midfield.

Curtis Jones 6

Didn’t have the same space as at Lincoln but still enough to execute a rabona first half. More influential after break and good ball sent Jota clear for a chance.

Harry Wilson 6

On the left of the midfield three, started hesitantly but grew into the game and some confident runs. Quieter after break and missed decisive penalty in shoot-out.

Mohamed Salah 6

Ostensibly on the right but a lot more dangerous when dropping central. Looked to fashion opportunities but a lot quieter second half before being replaced.

Takumi Minamino 7

Caused some issues when dropping deep and kept nibbling at the ankles of Arsenal players. Should have scored when hitting bar from close range just before break. Booked.

Diogo Jota 8

A few dangerous runs down the left first half and created a chance for Grujic and could have had penalty when fouled by Ceballos. Twice denied by fine saves from Leno. Subbed.

Joe Gomez (for Van Dijk 61) 7

Some important as Arsenal finally had a go in the final quarter.

Divock Origi (for Salah 61) 5

Went on the left but didn’t get much of a look-in then missed in the shoot-out.

Gini Wijnaldum (for Jota 76) 6

Minutes but netted his penalty.
