Before play, former selector and Australia great Mark Waugh said on Fox Cricket that time is running out for Finch.
“It’s now or never. I think he’s got these two games. He’s got to show something in these two games,” Waugh said.
“He would not be in the side if he wasn’t captain.”
But Finch was far from alone.
David Warner (5) swiftly followed Finch from the middle, also caught out playing an uppish drive to Henry.
Marnus Labuschagne also made five before he was trapped in front by Trent Boult. The No.4 reviewed unsuccessfully and looked in disbelief as he slowly made his way from the field.
Marcus Stoinis suffered the same fate for a duck, also reviewing his dismissal to Boult with ball-tracking showing the delivery was hitting middle stump.
Waugh was stunned in commentary, suggesting that Australia has been both “naive” when batting and the decisions to review when plumb were “selfish”.
“That is a shocking review” Waugh said of the Stoinis wicket. “Stone dead. Once again that’s naive batting.
“That’s as plumb as it gets. That’s where Smith (non-striker) should say, ‘no, that’s absolutely dead. Sorry, you’re out.’”
Waugh said that Australia was making the “same mistake over and over” with the bat.
Of the reviews, he added: “To me it shows signs of selfishness when players are reviewing when you know you’re out. That’s just selfish.”
Meanwhile, Ian Smith said he was shocked by Australia’s batting having suffered a major collapse for the third-straight ODI.
“I can’t believe this is Australia I’m watching. I simply find it quite astounding.”
Australia is without the injured Cameron Green, who posted a career best 89 not out – battling severe cramps on the way – to guide Australia home despite a late collapse in the first match.
He’s been replaced by Sean Abbott, while New Zealand
