LIVE BLOG: Updates on Newfoundland and Labrador’s COVID-19 outbreak, Feb. 12; province going to Alert Level 5; in-person election called off

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. —

The province is bracing for another fast and furious news day today. More information regarding the provincial election and COVID-19 are expected throughout the day.

Things are progressing quickly, so here’s what you need to know to stay informed today:

In short, the province is going to Alert Level 5 and the provincial election will become a mail-in process only. All that news comes after confirmation the COVID-19 outbreak that occurred in the metro St. John’s region in the past week involves a highly contagious strain of the virus.

  • 7:20 p.m. — An unexpected development: There will be a media briefing at 8:30 tonight involving Andrew Furey, John Haggie and Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janice Fitzgerald. This comes less than seven hours after the three participated in what could be called a regular daily briefing. The news release announcing the briefing makes no mention of the subject. The briefing will be live-streamed on this blog and on thetelegram.com
  • 12:30 p.m. — All practical driver examinations (road tests) at the Motor Registration Division (MRD) in Mount Pearl are temporarily suspended and will be re-evaluated after two weeks. Consideration will be given for any urgent requirements for commercial classes of licences.
  • 12:16 p.m. — The province’s Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development says visitation arrangements for children, youth and families served by the department in the metro St. John’s area may be modified as a result of the current outbreak of COVID-19. Social workers are contacting people to determine if alternate arrangements for ongoing contact during this two-week period are required. Changes are anticipated to last as long as the “circuit breaker” period described by CMOH.
  • 11:30 a.m. — DRL Coachlines is suspending service across the island. When busses leave St. John’s and Port Aux Basque on Saturday, they’ll end their trip at Springdale Junction. As such, package delivery is also suspended.

  • 10:30 a.m. — The City of St. John’s reports two confirmed cases of COVID-19 at City Hall and the municipal depot. Says a number of staff are in self-isolation due to close contacts. City maintains that no employee has had direct contact with the public.
  • 9:16 a.m. — RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador temporarily suspends non-urgent front counter services at Headquarters in St. John’s and detachments in Bay Bulls, Bell Island and Holyrood effective immediately. Suspended services include criminal record and vulnerable sector checks and general inquiries.
  • 4:13 a.m. — Lewisporte-Twillingate PC candidate Rhonda Simms is suspending her in-person campaign after a visitor to her campaign headquarters has received a presumptive positive COVID-19 test result. Simms and the Tories call for full suspension of provincial election.
  • Feb 11, 11:43 p.m. — The Newfoundland and Labrador Eastern School District announces it is suspending in-person learning at 29 more schools across the Avalon Peninsula.
  • Feb. 11, ~11:20 p.m. — NTV News reports that members of the Western Kings major midget hockey team are under a self-isolation order having taken a roadtrip to the St. John’s region last weekend.

    The popularity of the province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health continues to soar among Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

    Earlier this week, an official Dr. Janice Fitzgerald Fan Page was formed on Facebook and has already grown to over 4,600 members as of Friday morning.
