Line of Duty: Ted Hastings shocked by surprise DNA findings

The latest episode of Line of Duty ended on another cliffhanger leaving fans guessing as to what could possibly happen next. The fourth instalment of the BBC cop drama kept viewers on their toes, especially after DS Steve Arnott (played by Martin Compston) got caught up in an ambush. However, as the programme came to a close, Steve presented Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) a DNA file that proved DCI Joanne Davidson (Kelly MacDonald) was related to someone else in the police database. But, who could it be?

Line of Duty fans took to Twitter after the episode to share their theories and many predicted that DCI Davidson was related to bent copper John Corbett (Stephen Graham).

One viewer commented: “Police database contains DNA from DS John Corbett The picture that Jo Davidson threw her glass of wine at was of her and her mom and that’s Corbett’s mom too.”

Another tweeted: “Joanne’s DNA match is going to be Corbett.”

A third added: “Who was the DNA match?! I’m thinking Denton, Corbett or Jackie Laverty!”

A fourth said: “So who was the DNA match Idea 1) Corbett- they are siblings she quoted saying “she has no family” and HE was adopted.”

A fifth predicted: “The DNA match with Jo surely has to be John Corbett – they said HE and they said they ran it against officers on the database?”

Other viewers seemed to think that Jo could have been related to criminal Tommy Hunter, who died in an ambush during season two.

One tweeted: “So Jo Davidson is related to Tommy Hunter right, that’s what we’re all thinking?! Scottish guy that isn’t a cop whose DNA would be on the database.”

Another said: “I think It’s Tommy as when he went into witness protection his prints would have been taken off the police database, but like they said they looked at the wider database cause when Jo joined the force they didn’t test DNA. Tommy’s DNA would still be on the wider database.” (sic)

“The photo was of Jo Davidson, but whose DNA was it? My money is on Tommy Hunter,” one viewer guessed.

In season five of Line of Duty, John Corbett went undercover in the crime organisation, working his way up to become the leader of one of the small groups.

Some higher-up officials started to think John had gone rogue but he no longer trusted them and thought the best way to try and find the bent coppers was to go in on it alone.

Unfortunately for John though, his cover had been blown and he was murdered by Ryan Pilkington (Gregory Piper).

As tonight’s episode came to an end, the surprise DNA results were presented to Superintendent Hastings by Steve and DS Chloe Bishop (Shalom Brune-Franklin).

“We have investigated DCI Davidson’s version of events, an extended search at Farida Jatri’s (Anneika Rose) house detected a small number of DNA deposits closely matching an individual whose DNA is stored on the police database,” Chloe began.

“Joanne Davidson,” Steve continued.

Supt Hastings praised: “Great work, we’ve got her. She’s told a pack of lies about her relationship with Farida Jatri.”

Chloe continued: “Not only that sir, it means there was ample opportunity for Davidson to plant the burner phones at the property.”

Steve presented the Gaffer with a folder as he chipped in: “This isn’t the most significant finding sir.

“As we know sir officer samples are stored to exclude contamination of crime scenes, an officers DNA isn’t speculatively examined on a routine basis and certainly wasn’t back when Davidson joined the force,” Steve added.

“Because the DNA deposits detected at the house weren’t assumed to relate solely to a police officer, they were compared against the whole system.

“The analysis detected partial matches to a nominal who’s also stored on other police databases. It’s identified over the page.

“As we know sir, there’s only one credible explanation for Jo Davidson’s DNA matching this individual, they’re blood relatives.”

Is Joanne related to John Corbett or could it be someone else entirely?

Line of Duty returns on Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
