MANY sons follow their fathers into the music business. Some of the more famous reggae bloodline combos include the Marleys; Andrew Tosh, son of Peter Tosh; and, Asadenaki, Bunny Wailer’s son.

Veteran singer Hopeton Lindo and his son Lindo have taken things a step further. They recently recorded and co-produced Recharge You Remix with producer JonFX.

According to Lindo, it seemed natural for him to record a song with his “Pops” who also has a successful career as a songwriter.

“Since I started doing music I knew we were going to do a collab [collaboration]; it was only a matter of time. A lot of people don’t have the chance to do things with their dad so I seized the opportunity and asked him, ‘Let us do a remix to one of his favourite songs, from me,’ ” said Lindo.

Written by Lindo and produced by JonFX, Recharge You was released in June.

Best known for songs like Territory and Lonely Night, Hopeton Lindo agreed to the remix which was released in November.

“Words cannot express my love for my son so for us to do a father and son collab is pure magic,” he said.

Lindo was born in South Florida and grew up hearing and listening to the music of Lindo senior and his contemporaries, especially the songs made during the 1990s — a period considered by many pundits to be the golden age of dancehall music.

Hopeton Lindo wrote or co-wrote some of that era’s most memorable songs including Mr Loverman by Shabba Ranks, I Wanna be Loved by Buju Banton and Temptress, a hit for Maxi Priest.

His son believes it is important that his generation shows respect to the elders, and faciliatating collaborations is one way to do that.

“It’s very important because his era is the foundation of the music that I make now. I think music in my generation should go back to the roots and bring new vibes towards it,” he said.
