Lil Durk says J. Cole “smoked” him on their new track “All My Life,” which rolled out on Friday along with a video.
Speaking with Complex, as seen below, Durk was asked to elaborate on what he considered the “most surprising thing” about working with Cole.
“The number one thing, he smoked my ass on that, for one,” Durk said. “Barely. That barely happens. But shoutout to Cole, shoutout to [Dr.] Luke. We made it happen.”
The track, produced by Dr. Luke, arrived on the same day fans were initially expecting to get Durk’s new project Almost Healed. Moments before the album would have hit streaming services, its release—which would have seen it going head-to-head with YoungBoy Never Broke Again’s Richest Opp—was delayed. Almost Healed will now be released on May 26.
“All My Life,” notably, stands as the first time Durk and Cole have appeared together on a track. The song’s video, directed by Steve Cannon, will likely have topped a million views before anyone gets the chance to read this article.
Almost Healed will mark Durk’s first solo full-length release since last March’s 7220, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and featured appearances by everyone from Gunna to Morgan Wallen. In December, Durk gave fans a sequel to the Only the Family label compilation Loyal Bros, then followed that project up with a guest appearance on Don Toliver’s “Leave the Club” this February.
