Hamilton positioned his Mercedes on the outside of Piastri’s McLaren heading into the chicane.
But they then touched as they closed in on the corner.
Both drivers somehow avoided a huge shunt, with Hamilton springing across the front of Piastri, before straightening up in front of him.
The pair then went straight on at the corner, with the younger Australian sustaining front wing damage that forced him to pit.
Speaking over team radio, Piastri said: “He just turned across me under breaking.”
The stewards agreed, handing Hamilton a five-second penalty.
But that was little consolation for Piastri who was seen shaking his head in his cockpit during a lengthy pitstop to repair the damage.
The 22-year-old emerged in 14th after having a front wing change, and eventually ended up 12th, while also claiming the fastest lap of the race.

Meanwhile Hamilton managed to convert a sixth-place even with the penalty.
