‘Let it consume me’: Dan Andrews says job took a ‘toll’

Daniel Andrews says the “only way” he knew how to do his job was to “let it consume” him after the Victorian Premier announced his resignation on Tuesday.

Mr Andrews said to an extent “every waking moment” was about his work.

“That takes a toll,” he said during a media conference on Tuesday in which he announced his decision to resign effective from 5pm on Wednesday.

“To have been Premier for nine years and the leader of my party for 13 years is a greater set of opportunities than I ever thought would be afforded to me – a kid from the country with really only an aspiration to do good,” Mr Andrews said.

“The moment you’re not comfortable with that choice, doing this job as a defining feature your entire life pretty much, the moment you’re not comfortable with that decision for you and the people that you love, then you have to step away.”
