Leeds reportedly in talks to sign player Dan James once described as his ‘idol’

Leeds are reportedly in talks to sign free agent Juan Mata this summer after his release from Manchester United – a player Dan James once branded one of his “idols” while playing alongside the Spaniard at Old Trafford.

Mata, 34, is a free agent after his eight-year spell at United came to end. Joining the club in 2014 from Chelsea, Mata clocked up a huge 285 appearances – having a hand in 98 goals. But he only played 12 times last season.

Spanish newspaper AS report on Wednesday morning that Leeds are keen to keep Mata in the Premier League. So much so, that Victor Orta is in talks to keep the playmaker – who can play as a 10 or out wide in a narrow system.

Marsch prefers his wingers more inverted in order to allow the full-backs to overlap – suiting Mata. Speaking to Manchester United’s website last summer prior to his Leeds move, James named Mata as one of his idols.

“Thierry Henry was a player I always grew up watching. He was unbelievable as soon as he came to the Premier League. Also, a player that I play with now, Juan [Mata] was always an idol of mine growing up and such a professional as well.”

Reuniting the duo might just be what Leeds – and James – needs. Since his £25million move from Manchester United, James has shown glimpses of form but lacks the real quality many had hoped for, as a long-term target.

Plenty of speed, but at times overzealous. Decision making questionable. But having an older master to guide the likes of James through to the next level could be priceless. Brenden Aaronson may benefit, too, as a younger no.10.
