Viewers tuning into BBC’s Platinum Party at the Palace were stunned after Lee Mack took a swipe at the Prime Minister. Speaking in front of the Royal Family and Boris Johnson, Mack drew cheers and laughs from the crowd with a partygate joke.

As he took to the stage outside Buckingham Palace to host the live concert, The 1% Club presenter said: “Welcome to the Party at the Palace. We are here outside the gates of Buckingham Palace for a party of a lifetime.”

Mack then went on to reference the Downing Street lockdown gatherings as he quipped: “Finally we can say the words ‘party’ and ‘gate’ and it’s a positive.” As the audience laughed, Mack added: “It wasn’t in the autocue, admittedly” before moving on.

The partygate joke came just a day after some booing was heard in the crowds as the Prime Minister arrived at St Paul’s Cathedral for Friday’s Thanksgiving Service.

Those watching from home took to Twitter to comment. Julia @jrocksy joked: “Lee Mack and “party gate” with Bojo in attendance cringe but brilliant.”

Simon @simonedens added: “My highlights so far: HM The Queen & Paddington; Lee Mac’s partygate joke; Sam Ryder.” Twitter user @i3Roadtrip commented: “Lee Mack is a legend!!”

Melissa @melissan2509 wrote: “Lee Mack’s partygate joke though [laughing emojis]. And Luke laughed: “Lee Mack taking a swipe at #Partygate in the first two seconds of his speech” with several laughing face emojis.

Hosted by Kirsty Young and Roman Kemp , the Platinum Party at the Palace saw dozens of the biggest names in showbiz take to the stage in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The star-studded line-up included the likes of Queen + Adam Lambert and Craig David.

Other stars at the event included Alicia Keys, Diana Ross, Sam Ryder and George Ezra. Several members of the Royal Family – including Prince Charles, Princess Anne and William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – watched on from the Royal Box.
