4 Latvia Starts Russian-Registered Cars Confiscation

Starting today.

In Latvia, from February 15, 2024, amendments to the Law on Road Traffic come into force — the regulations provide for the confiscation of Russian-registered cars.

Owners of cars registered in Russia had to either register their vehicles in Latvia or take it out of the state before February 14.

According to Delfi, the amendments to the Law which will come into force this Thursday allow Russian-registered vehicles to participate in road traffic in Latvia only in cases of transit.

At the same time, it is worth considering that a vehicle registered in the Russian Federation will be able to cross the territory of Latvia in transit only once.

Before entering Latvia, it is necessary to provide information about the vehicle, the driver, as well as the period of time during which the vehicle will participate in road traffic in the country. This period should not exceed 24 hours. There is an obligatory electronic registration.

If the vehicle is not registered in Latvia or did not leave Latvia, as well as unauthorized for participation in road traffic — the authorities have the right to confiscate the car.

In addition, a fine of 750 to 2,000 euros is provided for illegal driving with Russian license plates.

The participation of some Russian-registered vehicles in traffic will also be allowed in cases the car is in the possession (or use) of a person with privileges and immunities, in accordance with international standards binding on Latvia, as well as in the case of diplomatic missions, international organizations, etc. In these cases, the driver must have documents confirming the above circumstances.
