Large teen gathering near Southgate mall ends in shooting, two critical: officials

CHICAGO – A large teen gathering near the Southgate Market shopping mall in South Loop ended in a shooting.

Now one teen is dead, another is injured and several others are facing charges.

The shooting happened around 7:45 p.m. Saturday in the 500 block of West Roosevelt Road near Canal Street. A few hours earlier, around 5 p.m., a group of about 500 teenagers were gathering in the area after a social media post.

Officers were nearby when shots were fired. They found two victims with gunshot wounds in the parking lot of a bank when they arrived on the scene.

A 17-year-old boy was transported to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest and neck and was pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner identified the 17-year-old on Sunday as Jeremy L. Smith.

Smith’s death was declared a homicide, according to the ME.

A 15-year-old boy was also transported to Stroger Hospital. He was shot in the leg and is listed in fair condition.

Police say a weapon was recovered at the scene and a suspect is in custody.

As of Sunday, multiple teens are facing charges in connection with the incident. They’re listed below:

  • Male, 16 – One misdemeanor count – disorderly conduct – breach of peace

  • Male, 17 – One misdemeanor count – disorderly conduct – breach of peace and one misdemeanor count of assault – simple

  • Female, 16 – One misdemeanor count – disorderly conduct – breach of peace

  • Male, 14 – One misdemeanor count – disorderly conduct – breach of peace

  • Male, 17 – One misdemeanor count – assault-simple

  • Female, 16 – One misdemeanor count – reckless conduct

  • Female, 17 – One misdemeanor count – reckless conduct

  • Female, 17 – One misdemeanor count – disorderly conduct – breach of peace

  • Sybrina Collins, 18 – One misdemeanor count of resisting/obstruct/peace officer/ correctional employee/firefighter

  • Three curfew violations
