Large teen gathering near Southgate mall ends in shooting, two critical: officials

CHICAGO – A large teen gathering near the Southgate Market shopping mall in South Loop led to a shooting. Now one teen is dead, another is injured and several others are facing charges.

The incident happened around 7:45 p.m. Saturday in the 500 block of West Roosevelt Road near Canal Street.

Officers were in the area when shots were fired. They found two victims with gunshot wounds in the parking lot of a bank when they arrived on the scene.

A 17-year-old boy was transported to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest and neck and was pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner identified the 17-year-old on Sunday as Jeremy L. Smith.

Smith’s death was declared a homicide, according to the ME.

A 15-year-old boy was also transported to Stroger Hospital. He was shot in the leg and is listed in fair condition.

Police say a weapon was recovered at the scene. As of Sunday, multiple teens are facing charges in connection with the incident.

  • Male, 17 – One misdemeanor count – assault-simple

  • Female, 16 – One misdemeanor count – reckless conduct

  • Female, 17 – One misdemeanor count – reckless conduct

  • Female, 17 – One misdemeanor count – disorderly conduct – breach of peace

  • Sybrina Collins, 18 – One misdemeanor count of resisting/obstruct/peace officer/ correctional employee/firefighter

  • Three curfew violations
