Lando Norris hits out “cringe” American trait in second United States blast

Lando #Lando

Formula One star Lando Norris has revealed the American trait he finds “the cringiest,” and his honest reaction to the Miami Grand Prix, during a recent interview. The McLaren driver was speaking ahead of the upcoming United States Grand Prix, taking place at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas later on Sunday.

Norris will start the race from second on the grid, behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, having impressed in qualifying. The 23-year-old started slowly before quickly improving to hold off fellow-Brit Lewis Hamilton, who will start the race from third. Norris also finished in fourth in Saturday’s sprint race and showed great promise towards the final stages.

Despite impressing on the track, off the track Norris has caused much debate following an appearance on The Dan Le Batard Show. The popular Netflix “Drive to Survive” star was taking part in a game of “Lando or Land-no,” where he reveals whether he approves of a claim or is against it.

Following a series of questions, Lando was asked his thoughts on U.S. culture, specifically Americans trying to do a British accent, to which he had a strong opinion. “Oh, it’s like the cringiest stuff ever,” he said.

“I feel like if British people almost do American it’s also just as bad.” When asked if he would attempt to speak in an American accent, he replied: “Nope, I’m not getting paid to do that so I won’t do it.”

The British driver also caused a stir when he delivered his honest verdict on the Miami Grand Prix, in which he finished in 17th place back in May earlier this season. “Lando, lan-no,” he said after a long pause leaving his verdict open before being asked why it isn’t an “instant Lando.”

“No, it’s not for me,” he added. “It’s the track, I don’t find the track the most exciting. When you’re driving in the car you want the track to be cool you don’t care where it is. It could be in the freaking middle of nowhere and you just want the track to be cool, and it’s not. When you’re driving it’s not the most exciting, so it’s as simple as that.”

Norris was also critical of the track in 2022 which saw several drivers struggle with the surface in the opening practice sessions. The race saw both Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas and Ferrari’s Carlo Sainz crash which prompted a backlash from drivers.

“It is extremely tricky. It is very bumpy in some areas which is not quite what we were expecting,” Norris said to Sky Sports. “I think everyone was expecting it to be very smooth and beautiful but it’s not.”

“The surface is very tricky as well, because you go off line anywhere and it is pretty much game over and you end up in the wall – it’s punishing let’s say,” Norris added. “That is why you have seen quite a few people ending up in the barriers. I feel like it isn’t going to be great for racing now. That is the negatives, but the positives are it is still a good track.”

Norris, who has five podium finishes so far this season, will be hoping for better conditions at the United States Grand Prix. The driver will be eyeing a first career victory, but in a season that has been dominated by Max Verstappen, Norris’ run of five podium finishes in his last eight races shows he is on the right path.
