The Grizzlies’ starting small forward has underwhelmed on offense.
Memphis Grizzlies starting small forward Dillon Brooks may be one of his team’s best defenders (though he hasn’t made much of a dent in LeBron James’ scoring efficiency yet), but his limitations on the other end of the floor have been exposed during the Grizzlies’ ongoing playoff series against your Los Angeles Lakers.
For the series, the 6’7″ swingman is averaging 11.3 points on .325/.250/.600 shooting splits, plus 2.3 rebounds and 1.7 dimes. The Grizzlies have had enough shooters to weather the storm of his inconsistency somewhat in this series (which LA leads 2-1), but it seems that the 2023 unrestricted free agent and his current club may be headed for a divorce if things don’t turn around.
In a new episode of the Hoop Collective podcast, Tim MacMahon of ESPN indicated that Memphis had attempted to improve at the small forward position at the trade deadline, with offers for Brooklyn Nets small forward Mikal Bridges and Toronto Raptors wing OG Anunoby.
“I don’t know if Dillon Brooks is on this team after this series,” MacMahon opined. “We’ll see if the Grizzlies can comeback and win it. I certainly don’t know if he’s on this team after free agency this summer, but the problem is if he’s not, who’s guarding all the best players? All the stars on the other teams?”
“If they’re letting Dillon Brooks go, they absolutely have to get a really, really, really good defensive wing player. They can let him go in free agency, they just have to figure out how to replace him. Trust me, they’ve put a lot of thought into that.”
