Labor Day 2022: What’s open, what’s closed. Will the mail run?

Labor Day #LaborDay

Today, Monday, Sept. 5, is Labor Day, the time set aside to remember the contributions workers have made to America. It’s also the unofficial end of summer and many people celebrate the holiday with gatherings and special events.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of the American worker. The holiday traces its roots to the late 19th century when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the contributions workers have made to the country.

Before it was a federal holiday, Labor Day was recognized in individual cities. New York state was the first to introduce a bill but Oregon was the first to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, on Feb. 21, 1887. Less than a decade later, 23 more states had adopted the holiday and, on June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September each year a legal holiday. That bill was later signed by President Grover Cleveland.

As a federal holiday, government offices are closed, as are state and local offices and schools.
