King Charles arrived at Balmoral Castle today to spend the next three weeks there on summer vacation.

Upon his arrival, he received an official welcome. He wore a kilt and a traditional Scottish outfit to inspect the Balaklava Company, 5th Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland. King Charles was recently announced as Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, succeeding Queen Elizabeth II.

Present at the ceremony was the Royal Regiment of Scotland’s mascot, Shetland pony Corporal Cruachan IV. Charles seemed particularly delighted to meet the pony:

While Queen Elizabeth would typically spend the entire summer at Balmoral, Charles and Camilla will be there just for the end of the season. King Charles has recently spent time at Castle of Mey, and Birkhall, his home on the Balmoral estate. However, he will spend the anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s death, and his accession, at Balmoral Castle.

It’s as yet unclear which members of the royal family will join the King and Queen at the Scottish castle this summer. It’s likely Prince William, Kate Middleton, and their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis will visit, as will King Charles’s siblings Prince Edward and Princess Anne and their respective spouses. Express reported that Charles’s brother Prince Andrew will be the first member to stay at Balmoral with the King and Queen. An “insider at the castle” told Express “The King and Andrew are now on much better terms and making him the first member of the family to join him is an olive branch.”
