LSU’s Kim Mulkey admitted she has “never” seen a player like Iowa’s Caitlin Clark in her career as the Tigers and Hawkeyes prepare to face off for the national championship.
In a press conference on Saturday, Mulkey was asked to evaluate Iowa star guard Caitlin Clark, specifically if Clark reminds Mulkey of any of the other star players she has seen in her 38-year coaching career.
“I’ve never seen a player, and I don’t like to use the word never, but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a player that can do what Caitlin does,” Mulkey said. “She’s gonna get her points, that girl’s phenomenal shooting the ball. But the most impressive thing to me, you’re talking to an old point guard, is she makes everybody around her better.”
Mulkey also said she saw Clark play for the first time in person on Friday when she and the Hawkeyes upset No. 1 South Carolina. Clark dropped 41 points, grabbed six boards and dropped eight dimes in the 77–73 win.
“I couldn’t take my eyes off of her,” Mulkey said on Clark. “God, she’s special.”
The Tigers will look to slow down the Naismith National Player of the Year. She averaged 27.7 points, 7.2 rebounds and 8.6 assists this season all the while shooting 38.7% from behind the arc. Clark has routinely shot from NBA range during her team’s March Madness run and no team has found a way to stop her.
Iowa and LSU are set to face off Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
