Kieran Maguire makes ‘incredible’ Liverpool claim after Premier League chief’s reveal

Selling clubs force Liverpool to pay an additional “premium” for transfers due to the “incredible” revenue recorded at the club.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about Richard Masters’ comments on the transfer market and the reason behind record spending in the Premier League.

As reported by The Guardian (2 March) Premier League CEO Masters insists Brexit has contributed to the record January spending by the Premier League this season.

Man United

Premier League clubs spent a collective £815million during the January window, with Chelsea contributing a large portion of that figure under Todd Boehly.

As a result, Masters has called on the FA to tweak the visa system introduced after Brexit which requires players to meet a points-based government body endorsement before being allowed to sign.

Maguire insists that blaming Brexit wholly is “harsh” and that elite Premier League clubs are forced to pay a “premium” because of the rich state of English football.

“I think Richard Masters’ comments in regards to Brexit inflating the market are a little bit harsh,” Maguire told Football Insider.

“Brexit has certainly not helped the football industry – it has helped relatively few industries.

“The prices being paid for transfers are partly a function of the general weakness of sterling, but to blame Brexit wholly for that is harsh albeit a contributing factor.

“The Premier League is seen as a rich organisation and therefore there is a premium charged to English clubs.

Liverpool

“Similarly, there is a premium attached to transfers paid by clubs such as Man United and Liverpool because selling clubs know these clubs generate incredible amounts of revenue.

“They see that they can tax the elite of the Premier League by sticking out for huge clauses in contracts or demanding inflated fees that other clubs in Europe wouldn’t be charged.“
