Kid Harpoon causes storm with Stormzy and Maya Jama remark in Harry Styles speech at BRITs

Harry Styles collaborator Kid Harpoon has sparked a storm at the BRIT Awards by making a barbed comment about Stormzy and Maya Jama while accepting an award. Kid Harpoon was on-stage with Styles to collect the final award of the night, when he made a reference to his wife saying they would “turn out the lights” and be like Maya and Stormzy “back in the day”.

The Love Island host and chart-topping grime star previously dated before splitting. On Twitter, Rakeem Omar tweeted: “Harry Styles you’re that guy but respectfully we need you to get your mate to explain that stormzy & maya joke because we are lost :/ #Brits2023.”

Wayne wrote: “ITV bleeping out Kid Harpoon’s comment of Maya and Stormzy lol #Brits.” Kathryn said: “Uhhh kid harpoon attempting to compare himself to Stormzy? Sir. Are you ok?”

Tara wrote: “MAYA AND STORMZY IFMSNKSK BEHAVE KID HARPOON????.” XM said: “Not kid harpoon dragging out maya and stormzy damnnn. #Brits2023.” Harry wrote: “kid harpoon saying him and jenny were going to be like maya and stormzy on live tv.”

“Uhhh kid harpoon attempting to compare himself to Stormzy? Sir. Are you ok?,” said another. “stormzy couldve pulled a will smith on kid harpoon and it wouldve been justified,” Daphne said. Former One Direction star Styles, 29, used his speeches to acknowledge his “privilege” and namecheck the female artists who were absent from the best artist category this year.

The event faced a backlash this year, its second with gender-neutral categories, after the best artist list featured only male artists – Central Cee, Fred Again, George Ezra, Stormzy and Styles. Taking to the stage, he said: “I want to thank my family for being the most supportive, understanding, patient, loving family I could have ever asked for.

“I want to thank my mum for signing me up for The X Factor without telling me, so I literally wouldn’t be here without you. I want to thank Nile, Louis, Liam and Zayn because I wouldn’t be here without you either. Thank you so much.”
