Kevin McStay hailed for ‘lovely touch’ as he highlights Ger Brady fundraiser in post-match interview

Kevin McStay has been hailed by fans for highlighting a fundraiser for former Mayo footballer Ger Brady after watching the Westerners defeat Kerry on Saturday evening.

The Mayo boss told TG4 that his side are making steady progress and are learning all the time, adding that there are still lots of areas for improvement.

But it was the fact that McStay went out of his way to comment on the fundraiser that many fans commended him for after the match.

Ger was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) last August and his family are raising funds to assist with ongoing medical care and support for him, as well as for the management of his future needs.

McStay said after Saturday’s game: “An old friend of Mayo, I just want to mention Ger Brady. I just want to wish him well from everybody in our squad. I managed him under 21, a tremendous fella. We just want to wish him the very best. We’re thinking about him and wishing only good things for him.”

The Mayo boss added: “Ger as a young footballer, I remember him, he was a tough cookie, a great competitor, we’re expecting to see the same from him (in his battle with MND).”

A number of people took to social media to commend the Mayo boss for mentioning the fundraiser and sending well wishes to Ger.

One said: “Kevin Mcstay classy as always mentioning Ger Brady fundraiser.”

Another commented: “A lovely shout out from Kevin McStay to Ger Brady in his post match interview.”

Someone else added: “Fair play to Kevin McStay, who made sure to get the mention in on @SportTG4 for a fundraiser for Ger Brady.”

“Lovely touch by Kevin McStay mentioning Ger Brady and the fundraiser,” read another comment.
