Sir Keir Starmer attempted to shrug off accusations he is boring voters by comparing Boris Johnson to Jabba the Hutt and an “icky” Love Island contestant at a feisty session of prime minister’s questions.
Amid growing murmurings in Labour circles that Starmer is not doing enough to capitalise on the government’s difficulties, he delivered an animated performance in the Commons replete with pop culture references.
As he criticised the prime minister for the economy’s slow growth, Starmer said: “He thinks he can perform Jedi mind tricks on the country. These aren’t the droids you’re looking for, no rules were broken, the economy is booming. The problem is the force just isn’t with him any more.
