Keir Starmer admits Labour has ‘mountain to climb’ as he faces Hartlepool by-election defeat

Labour has a “mountain to climb”, Sir Keir Starmer has admitted, as a new poll showed the party 17 points behind in the Hartlepool by-election.

Starmer said that he would take “full responsibility” for Labour’s showing in Thursday’s elections amid growing internal concern about the party’s performance.

A new Survation poll for Good Morning Britain on ITV, put the Conservatives on 50 per cent in Hartlepool, a seat Labour has held since it was created in 1974.

Another poll suggested that the party would also lose out in the first round to the Tories in the West Midlands and Tees Valley mayoral races, adding further pressure on Labour’s leader.
