Kate Moss Testifies Johnny Depp “Never” Threw Her Down Stairs in Amber Heard Case

On Wednesday, Kate Moss took the stand in Johnny Depp’s defamation trial against Amber Heard, testifying via video that Depp “never pushed me, kicked me, or threw me down any stairs.”

During Heard’s earlier testimony, she recalled a fight between the then couple and referenced a rumor that Depp had pushed Moss down the stairs. Heard alleged that her sister, Whitney Henriquez, was standing at the top of a staircase during an altercation between Depp and Heard and that Depp tried to hit her. Put on edge by the Moss rumor, Heard said she then swung at Depp. The New York Post reported that when Heard mentioned Moss by name, Depp’s lawyer Benjamin Chew gave a “fist pump.”

In her brief testimony, Moss was asked by Depp’s counsel about the alleged incident, which took place while the former lovers were vacationing at the GoldenEye resort in Jamaica.

“We were leaving the room, and Johnny left the room before I did. There had been a rainstorm. As I left the room, I slid down the stairs and I hurt my back,” she explained. “I screamed because I didn’t know what had happened to me and I was in pain. He came running back to help me and carried me to my room and got me medical attention.”

Moss maintained that Depp never pushed her down the stairs, telling the court that “he never pushed me, kicked me, or threw me down any stairs.”

Moss is the first long-term partner of Depp’s to officially testify (Ellen Barkin, who had a short relationship with Depp in the ’90s, testified about a moment when he threw a wine bottle in a hotel room, saying he was “controlling” and “jealous” during their fling).

Moss and Depp began dating in 1994. They met at Café Tabac in New York when he was 31 and she was 20.

There was volatility. Tales of fights followed him at the time, and one of the major tabloid moments from their time together was when Depp trashed his room at the tony Mark Hotel in New York, with police later suspecting there had been a fight between him and Moss. Per People at the time: “After several hours in a holding cell, he was released and told that the charges would be dismissed if he stayed out of trouble for six months and agreed to reimburse the Mark $9,767.12 in damages and guest fees.”

In that same article, John Waters told People, “I think Johnny obviously has a temper, but this is a very minor incident. The room service must have been bad.”

Moss and Depp broke up in 1997 and briefly reunited in 1998, attending the Cannes Film Festival together. “The whole thing was crazy because I should never have got so worked up over what people had to say about my work,” he told Hello! magazine after the breakup, referring to criticism of his feature directorial debut, The Brave, which he also wrote and costarred in with Marlon Brando. “Sure, I should care about my movies, but when I get home I should try to leave that stuff behind. I couldn’t do that and I was horrific to live with. Trust me, I’m a total moron at times.”
