Prince William and Kate Middleton may live a very different life from most of us, but even though their marriage is iconic, they’ve still suffered awkward dates like the rest of us

To some, the Prince and Princess of Wales have a fairytale romance, with castles, lavish weddings and tiaras thrown into the mix. But many will know that there’s a lot more to being a royal than just the glitz and glamour and it’s no secret that their relationship hasn’t always been easy – with a few splits along the way.

And it seems just like the rest of us, Kate Middleton and Prince William have even experienced the awkwardness of the early stages of dating, as the pair went from being just friends to something more while studying at St Andrews University in the early 2000s. The pair lived in the same dorms in the first year and moved into the same shared house in the second year, before sparks began to fly between them.

Kate has previously recalled how the first time she ever met William she went ‘bright red’, saying: “I actually think I went bright red when I met you and sort of scuttled off, feeling very shy.” Similarly William has told how he knew there was something ‘special’ about Kate from the early days. Speaking years after they met, he claimed: “When I first met Kate, I knew there was something very special about her. I knew there was possibly something that I wanted to explore there.”

As such he tried to impress his future wife by cooking ‘fancy’ dinners in their shared house. “I was trying to cook these amazing fancy dinners,” he told Press Association. “[But] what would happen was I would burn something, something would overspill, something would catch on fire. She would be sitting in the background trying to help and basically taking control of the whole situation.”

And it seems things didn’t get much better on their first official date either, as Kate reportedly tried to play a little joke on the prince, but it didn’t end well. According to Heart Radio, Kate attempted to curtsey to William as a joke, but she ended up falling over and making William spill a drink all over himself. Awkward!

Thankfully this didn’t put either of them off and the pair continued their romance, which we know has had a very happy ending. Despite some ups and downs along the way, William proposed to Kate in 2010 and she’s since learned all about royal etiquette and her curtseys are now perfect. During her official engagement interview, she told Tom Bradby she was “willing to learn quickly and work hard” when it came to royal life, to which William agreed “she’ll do really well”.

The couple famously tied the knot in 2011 in a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey and have since welcomed three beautiful children together, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Their relationship seems to have only gone from strength to strength, especially since becoming Prince and Princess of Wales when King Charles ascended to the throne.
