On the night of Chanel boss Karl Lagerfeld ‘s death, his beloved cat Choupette spent a relaxing evening watching The Bachelor, with little idea of the tragedy that was about to befall her.
The Birman kitty was orphaned two years ago today when Karl died due to complications from pancreatic cancer aged 85, and immediately plunged into a state of mourning.
After all, she had been Karl’s one true love. The fashion mogul had never married, but admitted that if he could, he would have exchanged vows with his prized cat.
The late star hailed the nine-year-old white fur ball the love of his life, and was devoted to her pleasure before his shock death on February 19, 2019.

As well as having two personal maids to tend to her every beauty need, the precious pussy also owned a iPad, loved to shop and ate her dinner from Goyard china next to Karl.
“She hates other animals and she hates children,” Karl once said of his high-maintenance pet.
“She stays always with me and she has two personal maids.
“They play with her, they have to take care of her beautiful white hair, the beauty treatments for her eyes, and they entertain her.
“She is the centre of the world. If you saw her, you would understand.”
Likening her to Hollywood scree siren Greta Garbo, ‘daddy’ continued, “There is something unforgettable about her, the way she moves, the way she plays. She’s an inspiration for elegance. For attitude.”

Such was his adoration for Choupette that Karl is said to have left her a vast chunk of his estimated £178million fortune. Not that she needs it, having made £3million in her own right from modelling contracts and endorsements.
He first met Choupette whilst house-sitting for French model Baptiste Giabiconi in 2011, and joked that he ‘abducted’ the feline before turning her into an international model.
“There is no marriage, yet, for human beings and animals… I never thought that I would fall in love like this with a cat,” the fashion mogul admitted of his profound love for his furry companion.
“I look a lot like Choupette… we’re really like an old couple. In fact, she maintains it (my beard) for me, we sleep on the same pillow and she spends her life licking it.”
Like any good diva, the cat had a bank balance to rival some of the catwalk’s biggest stars and pocketed £2million in 2015 alone for a collaboration with brand Shu Uemura and posing for a Vauxhall Corsa car calendar.

“She did two jobs and made 3 million euros last year,” Karl boasted to The Cut. “One was for cars in Germany and the other was for a Japanese beauty product.”
Speaking in the dark days after his passing, a representative for Choupette told Mirror Online she was struggling but surviving.
“At such a young age (and being a cat) that [grief] is challenging,” her spokesperson said.
“Karl Lagerfeld is and will always be her ‘Daddy’.
“She is choosing to put her best paw forward and hopes that her loyal fans and followers will continue with their outpouring of love to help ease the pain.”

So where is Choupette now? The cat went viral thanks for the famous Choupette’s Diary blog and Instagram page. But after Karl’s death, the updates mysteriously stopped, sparking a #WheresChoupette campaign.
But it turns out the kitty is alive and well and continuing to live her very best life, despite her loss.
In January 2020, Caroline Lebar, head of communications for the Karl Lagerfeld brand, told the New York Times that the spoiled feline is now living with her ‘nanny’, Karl’s housekeeper Françoise Caçote.
“She lives with her nanny here in Paris. She is in good shape, and is surrounded by love,” Caroline said.
And according to her agent – yes, she has one – she’s a very busy bee.
Lucas Bérullier, of My Pet Agency in Paris, added: “She comes to the agency on occasion, and we do photos here for her Instagram account. We have beautiful projects.”
A look at Choupette’s social media shows she lives a life of indulgence, holidaying in the sun and the snow, drinking kittie coffee and being lavished with Chanel goodies.
However, there was high drama behind the scenes when Choupette’s diary author Ashley Tschudin claimed she has been cut out of the cat’s life.
Ashley turned the moggy into a global sensation with Karl’s blessing.
But since his death, Ashley said she hadn’t been given any further access to the cat and was forced to upload cartoons before shutting down the operation all together.
“My Choupette’s Diary email inbox is now as silent as the quarantine life I currently live,” she wrote in a blog post last August.
Choupette now has a new Instagram account, @Choupetteofficiel.
And in her latest post, she admitted she’s still pining for her master.
“There are times in life when you would like to bring someone back from heaven, just spend a day with him, just give him a hug, kiss him or just listen to his voice or his laugh…” she – or someone with actual hands – wrote.
“Having the opportunity to tell him that we love him and tell him that it’s so hard without his presence… With my eternal love, Choupette.”
