Kari Lake Equates AR-15s With Rocks, Shares Bible Gun Justification

Arizona media personality and Trump-endorsed political office aspirant Kari Lake shared a tweet by a conservative bedfellow that equates AR-15 rifles with rocks. Using a biblical reference to both David and Goliath and Cane and Abel, the tweet says: “A stone in evil hands killed Abel. A stone in righteous hands killed Goliath. It’s not about the stone, it’s about the one who wields it.”

The timing makes the tweet a deliberate commentary on the tragic mass shooting at a Nashville school — and its implicit political content is a broad defense of the Second Amendment — and the people’s right “to keep and bear arms.”

Lake’s mini-parable is a restatement, freshened with biblical characters, of the most common stance against gun reform — the oft-repeated “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.”

Lake, who lost her bid for the Arizona governor’s seat in November, has heard her name bandied about as a potential running mate in a Trump/Lake 2024 GOP ticket. The nomination is a long way off — and MAGA strivers like Ron DeSantis are presumably aiming to knock Trump out of the top spot — but it’s reasonable to assume that every move Lake makes has this potential ticket in mind. Trump’s MAGA base and NRA advocates are highly overlapped constituencies.

Lake was recently in the news when she taunted President Biden on Twitter during his 2023 State of the Union address, saying “Sorry, Joe. I’m not handing over my AR-15.”

The President hadn’t asked her to, though he did ask Congress to consider mandatory background checks to try to prevent people with violent histories from easily obtaining semi-automatic weapons.
