There’s a Group 1 derby in Adelaide and a crucial weight-for-age race on the Gold Coast on Saturday, but star rider Jamie Kah ensured eyes will also be on the Caulfield meeting after an ominous start to the day.

Kah is a certainty to win the Melbourne jockeys’ premiership this season as her lead extended to 28 over Damian Lane with an early double after the first two races. But she could also bring up a personal best for winners on a single day such is her superb form and the strength of her book.

In all, Kah is riding six favourites at Caulfield and she finishes the day on the unbeaten Ayrton, who is expected to win at an extremely short quote.

The 25-year-old began the day at Caulfield with an all-the-way win aboard Snitzel colt Generation ($2), who may have earned himself a trip to Queensland with the dominant victory.

“I was happy to sit second,” Kah said. “I’ve got a pretty good opinion of this horse and it’d be nice to teach him to not have to jump and run every start.

“He wasn’t pulling but he’s got quite an awkward head carriage and holds his head high and does a little bit wrong, which is positive going forward that there’s things to work on.

“He took that extra hundred metres (to settle), which I wasn’t worried about because he’s classy horse. If he can learn to drop the bit and settle, I think he’s going to be a nice horse. All he can do is win and he did that pretty easily.”

Just 40 minutes later, Kah was back in action and she gave Excelman a soft ride behind the speed in the Emerald Hill Handicap (2000m) before sending him home for punters at the odds of $2.20.

Of Excelman, she said: “We had to push the button a little bit sooner than I wanted to, but I’ve been in that trap before where they come around you at the 1000 (metre mark) at this track. I wasn’t letting that happen today, so I popped off and tried to keep him in a good rhythm.

“He was the horse to beat in this race and he made my job very easy.

“He’s a beautiful ride. He’s quiet and he’s a jockey’s dream out there.”

Kah’s best in Melbourne has been four winners, which is a feat she achieved last spring at The Valley on Cox Plate Day.
