Bryson DeChambeau is the most innovative force in golf in years, a man who is questioning every aspect of the way the game is played, and is willing to use himself as a lab rat to experiment and find new ways to break open the game.
He’s also a really, really strange dude.
These two things are inevitably linked. It takes a certain sort of person to drink upwards of seven protein shakes a day to add the weight necessary to hit his drives farther, or take time out of a tournament to argue with a rules official about how dangerous fire ants can be.
DeChambeau is a singular soul, and in his latest interview with GQ, he made that abundantly clear. This extended to perhaps his most stunning claim in the piece — that his “goal” is to live until he is 130 or 140 years old.
It’s perfect DeChambeau — bombastic, otherworldly, kind of strange, sadder than he might realize. But one of my favorite parts of this Season of DeChambeau we’re having is how other golfers on tour are now recognizing how weird this is … and having a lot of fun with it.
The latest is Justin Thomas — breakout star of The Match whose on-course commentary made the whole thing fantastic — who saw the quote from DeChambeau and couldn’t resist having some fun with it.
It’s perfect. The only way to respond to DeChambeau is to ask him what on earth he’s talking about, tag him, and then hit him with two crying laughing emojis.
Also DeChambeau is totally going to live to 130 years old, isn’t he?
