‘Just get down the tunnel!’ – Jamie Carragher slams over-celebrating Arsenal star after win over Liverpool

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has taken a swipe at Martin Odegaard for over-celebrating after Arsenal claimed all three points in Sunday’s 3-1 victory for the Gunners.

The north Londoners took charge of the first half at the Emirates and dominated proceedings, with Bukayo Saka opening the scoring after Kai Havertz’s initial effort was saved.

Liverpool offered little threat in response but managed to go into the break with the scores level after a calamitous passage of play saw Gabriel Magalhaes handle the ball into his own goal on the stroke of half-time.

The visitors upped their game in the second period and showed more intent going forward, but another bizarre goal gifted Arsenal the initiative this time around.

A hopeful ball over the top looked like it would be easily dealt with by Virgil van Dijk, who left the ball for Alisson to boot clear, but the Brazilian kicked nothing but air and the ball rolled perfectly for Gabriel Martinelli to pass into an unguarded net.

Liverpool tried to push for an equaliser but their task was made even harder when Ibrahima Konate was shown a second yellow card, before Leandro Trossard wrapped up the win late on.

Arsenal’s victory sees them move within two points of Premier League leaders Liverpool and puts them firmly back in the title race, and they were understandably pumped up when the full-time whistle went.

But Carragher seemed to feel that the celebrations went a little over the top, particularly when skipper Odegaard took club photographer Stuart MacFarlane’s camera and started taking photos of him in front of the elated Emirates crowd.

‘Dear me,’ said a bristling Carragher on Sky Sports. ‘Just get down the tunnel. You’ve won a game. It’s three points.

‘They’ve been brilliant, they’re back in the title race, get down the tunnel.’

When his fellow studio pundits chuckled at his little rant, Carragher added: ‘I’m serious, honestly.’

Reacting to Arsenal’s win, man of the match Jorginho said: ‘We believe in ourselves and rely on each other. The Liverpool goal did not change anything that we had done.

‘We knew how to get back in the second half. We had to push each other and keep the energy high.’

He added: ‘It is such a good group and a humble group who listen to each other and no-one is selfish. Here everyone thinks for the group and the maturity of our team was demonstrated today.’

The result moves Arsenal up to second place, two points behind Liverpool, but reigning champions Manchester City can leapfrog both if they win their two games in hand – beginning against Brentford on Monday night.
