‘Just a blip in the road for Trippier’

Kieran Trippier’s recent dip in form is “just a blip in the road” according to former Premier League striker Glenn Murray.
The defender’s error deep into stoppage time allowed Mykhailo Mudryk to score and force Tuesday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final to penalties, and then Trippier fired wide from the spot.
The England full-back was culpable for the goals conceded in the defeat at Everton before having a nightmare in the thrashing at Tottenham.
“All professionals have moments where you just can’t seem to put a foot right,” Murray told BBC Radio 5 Live. “Unfortunately Kieran Tripper is in one of those.
“He showed great character, stood up and took a penalty. He is usually so reliable in everything he does, especially from set pieces. But just that element of doubt in his mind at the moment and he drags it wide.
“It’s a tough moment for him but I have no doubt he will bounce back. He will show resilience like he always has during his career. He had it a little bit at Spurs where he seemed to be the go-to man to blame for everything.
“He bounced back, went to Atletico and has led this Newcastle team on to quite special things considering where he signed from. He was the first one to take the leap with Eddie Howe and so far it’s went perfectly. This is just a blip in the road for him.”
On whether Eddie Howe should have stepped in and stopped Trippier taking a penalty, Murray added: “You’ve got to trust your players, especially the ones that have been around the top for a very long time.
“It’s a difficult one. Does Eddie stand up and say don’t take it? If Kieran feels comfortable to take it I think you say get back on the horse and prove yourself right. Unfortunately it just didn’t happen. It will be highlighted because of recent mistakes, but like I said I have nothing but faith in Trippier.”
