Jurgen Klopp reviews Rangers victory

Jurgen Klopp has warned Mohamed Salah that the reason behind his stuttering start to the season is because he has been “too static”.

The Egyptian – a lot like many of his teammates – have endured a tricky few months at the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

Despite having accumulated five goals to his name in all competitions thus far, only two of those have come in the Premier League.

Salah has not scored a goal in league action since August with his goal drought now stretching to four games – one of the longest barren spells of his Liverpool career.

When asked what the specific problem is with Salah this term, Liverpool boss Klopp has reaffirmed that the lack of movement among the Reds’ attack is something that is proving detrimental to the Egyptian.

As quoted by Sony Sports Network, the German said: “Now, so the position not really changed and what he has to do hasn’t changed. It’s just how it always was when we don’t play our best football, then we have been too static.

“That means when we are static, that means it’s a bit more often outside wide. There are always moments where we have to be outside why but we need him as well, because of the goal is a bit more central, you need to be there as well. And so the observation is not wrong. But we work on flexibility in that area as well.”

Salah’s chances of retaining the Premier League golden boot now look a stretch considering Erling Haaland ’s electric start to life with Manchester City. The Norwegian already has 14 league goals to his name so far this season with a further five coming in Europe.

Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has recently criticised Salah for bulking up, a reason he believes is behind his slump in form.

Speaking with Lord Ping, he said: “Salah hasn’t been the player since January when he came back from AFCON.

“It would be great for a player like me but for Salah, it’s not good enough. First of all, the problem is a lack of competition. For many games, he hasn’t been good enough. At the moment, he’s too strong and you can see he has lost a bit of speed.”

Salah will be aiming to break his goalless league run this weekend with Liverpool set to do battle with table topping Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Gabriel Jesus is currently the Gunners’ top goalscorer having netted five goals – the same as Salah – since his summer switch from Man City.
