Jurgen Klopp in revolt with FSG over European Super League plan for Liverpool – report

Jurgen Klopp is reportedly on a collision course with Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group over their decision to sign up to the European Super League.

English football was rocked on Sunday with news emerging of plans to implement a new European Super League. A statement released by the new group on Sunday night confirmed the speculation. Twelve of Europe’s biggest clubs had signed up to the new proposal, which would involve forming their own competition to rival the Champions League. Those plans involve six Premier League clubs, including Liverpool. They are joined by Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and the more hesistant, Manchester City.

The plans have already been widely condemned by the likes of Gary Neville, who has called for the clubs to be relegated from the Premier League.

And late on Sunday night, Prime Minister Boris Johnson also joined the weight of opposition against the plans.

However, according to the Daily Mirror, Liverpool could have a more immediate problem. They state Klopp and FSG are ‘in disagreement’ over the plan for the Reds to join the European Super League.

Citing quotes from two years ago, they claim Klopp is happy with the current format and is ‘strongly opposed’ to the notion.

He said: “I hope this Super League will never happen.

“With the way the Champions League is now running, football has a great product, even with the Europa League.

“For me, the Champions League is the Super League, in which you do not always end up playing against the same teams.

“Of course, it is [financially] important. But why should we create a system where Liverpool faces Real Madrid for 10 straight years?

“Who wants to see that every year?”

The paper now claims Liverpool face a battle to not only convince their supporters but also Klopp. In the midst of a difficult season, it’s not exactly the distraction they need.

It will also hardly help matters amid claims Bayern Munich could move for Klopp should they lose Hansi Flick.

The German giants, alongside Borussia Dortmund, both rejected invites to join the European Super League.

Speaking during Sky Sports’ coverage of Man Utd’s victory over Burnley, Neville was fuming at the plans.

“I’m not against the modernisation of football competitions, we have the Premier League, the Champions League. But I think to bring forward proposals in the midst of Covid and the economic crisis for all clubs is an absolute scandal.

“United and the rest of the ‘Big Six’ that have signed up to it against the rest of the Premier League should be ashamed of themselves.

“The reaction to it is that it has been damned, and rightly so. I am a Manchester United fan and have been for 40 years but I am disgusted, absolutely disgusted.”

“I am disgusted by Manchester United and Liverpool the most. Liverpool, the pretend (with) ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ (they are) the people’s club, the fans’ club.

“Manchester United – 100 years, born out of workers. And they are breaking away into a league without competition, that they can’t be relegated from?

“It is an absolutely disgrace. Honestly, we have to wrestle back power in this country from the clubs at the top of this league, and that includes my club.”
