Jurgen Klopp fumes with referee over ‘unbelievable’ Ibrahima Konate red card against Arsenal

Jurgen Klopp was once again less than impressed with the referees after Ibrahima Konate was sent off during Liverpool’s defeat at Arsenal.

Liverpool suffered only their second Premier League defeat of the season on Sunday, as they were deservedly beaten 3-1 by the Gunners.

The result means the Reds are still leading the title race, but Arsenal are now just two points behind, while Manchester City will overtake Liverpool if they win their two games in hand.

To make matters worse for Klopp’s side, Konate was given his marching orders in the 88th minute after being shown a two yellow cards, both for fouls on Kai Havertz.

His absence, combined with Joe Gomez being subbed off earlier, meant Liverpool were incredibly vulnerable down the right-hand side, and it allowed Leandro Trossard to easily get in and score Arsenal’s third just minutes later.

At the time of the red card, the score was 2-1 and had he stayed on it could well have changed the result, with Klopp appearing to sarcastically give the referee a thumbs up over the decision.

Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, the manager did not take too much issue with Konate’s sending off itself, but rather how several Arsenal players escaped punishment for committing similar fouls.

‘A lot of things were against of us today. This referee [Anthony Taylor] gave me a red card against Man City for wrestling situation between Bernardo Silva and Mo Salah.

‘Today same situation with [Diogo] Jota but didn’t get a red card. It is unbelievable.

‘Then the holding of Havertz on Konate for the first yellow card. Then Havertz goes down and the referee gives Konate a yellow card.

‘Gabriel [Magahaels] does the same to [Darwin] Nunez and no yellow card!

‘We should have played better, but everything went against us! We lost the game, fact. The way, strange.’

Konate will now miss Liverpool’s home clash against Burnley this Saturday and leaves Klopp very short on centre-back options with Joel Matip out injured for the rest of the season.
