The Green Bay Packers have made an early free agency splash, signing former Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs on Monday, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.
Jacobs was the NFL’s leading rusher during the 2022 season, recording 1,653 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground in 17 starts. Although his 2023 campaign wasn’t as strong, he still recorded 397 yards during his final five appearances of the year.
He’ll split carries with Aaron Jones in the Packers’ backfield, with the two immediately becoming one of the league’s most formidable running back duos. Fans were shocked by the announcement, as Jacobs spent the first five years of his career with the Raiders prior to the contract agreement.
After a surprising season that ended with a trip to the divisional round of the playoffs, general manager Brian Gutekunst is clearly focused on bolstering the offense surrounding quarterback Jordan Love.
Green Bay averaged 112.1 yards per game on the ground as a team in 2023, representing the No. 15 mark among NFL teams. It’s fair to expect that average to rise in 2024 with an All-Pro running back added to the offense.
