Jonjo Shelvey hints at Newcastle’s target for next season as he addresses ‘bad’ campaign

Jonjo Shelvey hopes Newcastle United can ‘really kick on’ next season and become an established top 10 side after the Magpies took a giant step towards safety at the weekend.

With just six matches to go, Newcastle are eight points clear of the relegation zone following a 3-2 win against high-flying West Ham on Saturday.

Steve Bruce has now set the Magpies the target of bettering last season’s 13th-placed finish and amassing more points than the 44 they accumulated in 2019-20.

Although injuries and illness have played their part at times this season, there was much talk last summer of Newcastle challenging for a place in the top half but 11 points currently separate 10th-placed Leeds and the black-and-whites.

If Newcastle do stay up – it is worth bearing in mind that the Magpies also have a game in hand on 18th-placed Fulham – Shelvey hopes his side can break into the top half next season.

“Just to keep getting my games and keep playing.,” the stand-in captain told NUFC TV about his goals “Obviously, I’m not getting any younger – I turned 29 not so long ago.

“We’ve had a bit of a bad season this year and we need to secure the status with the Premier League next season and then hopefully really kick on next year and try and establish this club as a top 10 team.

“The club’s massive. You don’t realise how big this club is – even when you go on holiday. I went to Florida a few years ago and everywhere I went, in any part, there was someone with a Newcastle top on.

“I only ever experienced that when I was at Liverpool because Liverpool is a massive club as well but this club definitely has the potential.

“I say potential…it was there not long ago and it’s just about getting that club back to where it should be.

“For as long as I’m here, then, that’s what I’ll strive to do.”
