If you like baseball even a little, and maybe even if you don’t, I’m sure you like the movie Field of Dreams. The classic, starring Kevin Costner, hearkens back to the days when baseball brought families and communities together, no matter what hardships people were going through.
35 years after the 1989 hit, John Mulaney has brought it back into the spotlight with a downright hilarious bit about the film at the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday.
First off, Field of Dreams is an incredible movie. I’m a baseball guy, and it’s my absolute favorite baseball movie. The beauty of baseball, that the game has undergone very minimal changes in the last century-plus, is fully on display throughout the film.
But, John Mulaney, who I think is showing a lot of respect to the film, does make a lot of great points. Namely, that Kevin Costner’s character was pretty nonchalant about losing his home and was instead intent on building a baseball field for ghosts.
Objectively speaking, way more people should’ve told Costner’s character that he needed to seek immediate psychiatric attention.
Of course, people did come, the farm was saved, and it was happy-ever-after. But, if someone tells you they’re going to build a baseball field for the ghosts of the Black Sox, I think you’re going to be very skeptical that person is sane. John Mulaney clearly agrees.
Anyway, people were loving Mulaney at the Oscars.
