John Legend continued with the upbeat mood with his performance at the “Celebrating America” concert as Inauguration Day wrapped up on Wednesday (Jan. 20).
The 11-time Grammy winner celebrated President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ inauguration by singing “Feeling Good,” which was made popular by Nina Simone in 1965, performing in front of the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Like Simone, Legend kicked off the song by letting his vocals shine alone. When the band kicked in, he sat down at the grand piano to continue his powerful performance.
“It’s a new dawn/ It’s a new day/ It’s a new life/ For me/ And I’m feeling good/ I’m feeling good,” Legend belted out, the lyrics reflecting the fresh beginning and feelings of hope as the Biden-Harris administration takes office.
Legend and wife Chrissy Teigen have been outspoken critics of former president Donald Trump and his policies, often criticizing him on social media. Hours before his performance, the celebrated artist retweeted Minnesota’s Rep. Ilhan Omar, who had written that “Elections have consequences” and noting the actions that Biden had already made since being sworn in earlier in the day. Along with the retweet, Legend wrote, “It’s a new day.”
Earlier in the day, he also shared his feelings about being in D.C. to help celebrate the new president and vice president. “We feel very grateful to be part of this moment,” he wrote, also sharing an Instagram photo of Teigen leaning in to kiss him on the cheek in front of the statue of Abraham Lincoln.
The “Celebrate America” concert was hosted by Tom Hanks and featured performances by Justin Timberlake with Ant Clemons, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Katy Perry, and many more.
