NEW YORK CITY (TND) — Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., called for one of his Democratic colleagues to be expelled from the Senate following former Rep. George Santos’s removal from Congress Friday.

The Pennsylvania senator advocated for Sen. Bob Menendez’s, D-N.J., ousting during an appearance on ABC’s The View.

We have a colleague in the Senate that actually did much more sinister and serious kinds of things – Sen. Menendez,” Sen. Fetterman said. “He needs to go.”

Sen. Fetterman questioned how Congress could allow Menendez to remain in the Senate while dismissing former Rep. Santos.

“Santos kind of lies funny – he landed on the moon and that kind of stuff – whereas Menendez is really a senator for Egypt, not New Jersey,” Sen. Fetterman said.

He added that the New Jersey politician has the right to “his day in court,” but not the right to congressional votes.

We need to make that kind of decision to send him out,” Fetterman concluded.

Sen. Menendez allegedly tried to use his position to benefit the Egyptian government and New Jersey businessmen in exchange for hundreds of thousands of dollars for himself and his wife. The bribes allegedly included gold bars, a luxury convertible, cash and mortgage payments.

The alleged conduct in this conspiracy damages the public’s faith in our system of government and brings undue scorn to the honest and dedicated public servants who carry out their duties on a daily basis,” FBI Assistant Director in Charge James Smith stated. “To those inclined to use the status of their public office for personal benefit, the FBI will ensure that you face the consequences in the criminal justice system for your underhanded dealings.”

Sen. Menendez has denied receiving bribes, explaining “these are monies that were withdrawn from my personal savings” based on his “lawfully derived income” over 30 years. He claims “forces behind the scenes” have attempted to dig his “political grave.”

The U.S. House of Representatives expelled Santos after its Ethics Committee found “substantial evidence” the former New York congressmen broke multiple laws. He allegedly lied to Congress, fooled donors, engaged in credit card fraud and used campaign funds to pay for personal services like OnlyFans and Botox.

Santos has denied any wrongdoing, and called the investigation a “witch hunt.” He recently announced he would not run for reelection next year.

“I will remain steadfast in fighting for my rights … I am humbled yet again and reminded that I am human and I have flaws, but I will not stand by as I am stoned by those who have flaws themselves,” Santos claimed. “I will however NOT be seeking re-election for a second term in 2024 as my family deserves better than to be under the gun from the press all the time.”
