BOSTON–The rivalry between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Boston Celtics is well-documented. These two teams have a long history of brawls and heating each other that can sometimes spill onto the floor.
The Sixers fell to the Celtics 126-117 in the season opener and there were fireworks early in the third quarter between Joel Embiid and Boston guard Marcus Smart.
Embiid and Smart went up for a rebound and they were then tangled up. Smart then appeared to trip Embiid and the big fella then got into it with both Smart and Jaylen Brown.
“Honestly, I don’t know,” said Embiid. “They had called a foul and I walked away, next thing I know, my foot is getting caught up, and I slipped. Next thing, Jaylen was on top of me and I don’t know. Basketball. Emotions, first game of the season, rivalry, Boston-Philly, a lot of intensity. It’s all good.”
Afterward, on the Boston side, Smart had some stronger words for Embiid as he was hit with a technical foul after the scuffle.
Embiid and Smart have a history of going at each other so this is nothing new. It will be interesting to see how the Sixers now respond in the home opener on Thursday against the Milwaukee Bucks.
