Joel Embiid, Marcus Smart have heated exchange after third quarter collision
Embiid #Embiid
BOSTON — Tensions seemed relatively tame during the first half of the Celtics’ season opener, but on the first play of the second half, there were immediate sparks between the C’s and Sixers.
Marcus Smart and Joel Embiid got into a spat just 19 seconds into the second half. Embiid appeared to elbow Smart in the back after the big man got the rebound. Smart, who was on the ground, tried to grab Embiid’s leg which led to both players ending up on the court.
That led to the altercation heating up. Jaylen Brown also got into Embiid’s face while the Sixer was still on the ground. That led to the refs and other players breaking up the players, though Smart did try to get at Embiid again.
A normal foul and technical foul was assessed to Smart on the play. After review, the refs didn’t penalize anybody else for the interaction.
