Joe Gomez expected to be axed from Liverpool XI v Napoli after development – pundit

Joel Matip will replace Joe Gomez in the Liverpool starting lineup at Napoli on Wednesday (7 September).

That is the view of former Spurs and England number one Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about potential changes to the Reds XI.

Gomez has started alongside Virgil van Dijk in Liverpool’s previous four fixtures.

Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip have been sidelined through injury in recent weeks.

On Saturday (3 September), Matip made his return from injury as a second-half substitute in a goalless draw at Goodison Park.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if Gomez would likely retain his place at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, Robinson said:

“I don’t think he’s done enough to cement himself as first choice for the rest of the season.

“He will be part of the rotation when everyone is fit. Virgil van Dijk plays if he is fit. He does not get rotated.

“I don’t think Gomez has played well enough to stake a case for being the first choice alongside Van Dijk.

“Last season Konate and Matip played ahead of him.

“Matip came back at the weekend. If he came through unscathed and is fit for the Napoli game, I think he comes back in alongside Van Dijk.”

Gomez helped the Reds keep clean sheets against Bournemouth and Everton.

Matip started the opening day draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage.
