Joao Felix is on his way to sign for Chelsea after they reached a full agreement to sign him on loan from Atletico Madrid.

Felix has grown unsettled at Atletico Madrid in recent months for a variety of reasons. And with Diego Simeone’s side out of Europe, he has been identified as someone they can sacrifice.

A Premier League transfer has long been touted for the Portuguese talent. For example, he was linked with Manchester United and Arsenal. But Chelsea recently came into contention for his signature and have won the race.

On Monday, they reached a verbal agreement to take the attacker for the rest of the season. Now, one day later, the total agreement is complete.

Several sources have indicated that the deal is done and Felix is bound for London. Summing everything up, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has taken to Twitter to confirm the move is going ahead.

Romano used his signature ‘here we go’ catchphrase to confirm Chelsea are about to get their hands on Felix.

The reporter then broke down the details of how much Chelsea will be paying for the 23-year-old.

Atletico will be receiving a fee of €11million (£9.7million) from Chelsea for Felix’s loan. What’s more, the Blues will be covering his salary in full, which means their total outlay should come closer to €15million (£13.2million).

However, his long-term future could still be in Spain, since Felix is extending his contract with his parent club until 2027 first. It may just be a tactic to preserve his market value when the time comes for a sale, though.

Either way, his immediate future will lie in London. Indeed, Felix is ready to fly to the English capital on Tuesday ahead of his medical and the signature of his contract.

Felix will be arriving at Chelsea with 131 Atletico appearances and 34 goals behind him. He also previously scored 20 goals in 43 games for Benfica.

Now, he will be playing in the Premier League for the first time. Out of all the teams in the top half of the table at present, Chelsea have scored the fewest goals this season. Therefore, he will have some responsibility in turning their fortunes around.

That said, he isn’t necessarily an out-and-out centre-forward. Although he has five goals to his name from 20 appearances this season, he has been more effective as a winger in terms of his efficiency in front of goal.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see what kind of role Graham Potter has in mind for him.

Felix will be Chelsea’s fourth signing of the January transfer window after Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana and Andrey Santos.

Chelsea are next in action on Thursday when they face Fulham away from home.
