Jets show why they’re the worst in embarrassing loss to Seahawks

NY Post #NYPost

On a day the Seahawks punched the Jets in the mouth, it was only appropriate that Seattle put Geno Smith into the game to finish off the Jets.

The ghost of Jets quarterbacks past got to play Sunday in part because the present quarterback Sam Darnold could not find the end zone and now Jets fans can only dream about the future quarterback.

Trevor Lawrence can’t get here fast enough.

The Jets gave everyone a reminder in Seattle why they are the worst team in the NFL and why they almost certainly will have the No. 1 pick in the draft and the opportunity to draft the Clemson star.

The Jets made mistake after mistake and helped a Seahawks team that really did not need any help to a 40-3 victory at Lumen Field.

“This got away from us very quickly,” coach Adam Gase said. “When you have chances against a team like this, you better take advantage of them or this is what the outcome is going to be.”

The loss drops the Jets to 0-13, the worst record and longest losing streak in franchise history. They are the ninth team since the 1970 merger to start 0-13. Games against the Rams, Browns and Patriots are all that remains between them and Lawrence. If they lose out, the pick is theirs. If they win, they need to pray for a Jaguars win.

Watching the Jets on Sunday, it is hard to imagine them being able to beat nearby Madison High School, never mind an NFL team.

A week after losing to the Raiders in heartbreaking fashion in the final seconds, the Jets lost in butt-kicked fashion in a game that was over early. The defensive coordinator switch from Gregg Williams to Frank Bush had no effect on slowing down the Seahawks (9-4), who racked up 410 yards.

Former Jet Jamal Adams did not blow up the game, but got the last laugh with his new team cruising to an easy win and moving closer to the playoffs.

Sam Darnold threw three near interceptions, including one by Adams. Darnold was under siege by an aggressive, blitzing Seattle defense. He was sacked twice and constantly rushed. Darnold finished 14-of-26 passing for 132 yards against a Seattle pass defense ranked 32nd in the NFL entering the game.
