Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriguez Split: “We Are Better As Friends”

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have confirmed they are breaking up after weeks of speculation.

“We have realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so,” said the A-list pair in a joint statement to NBC’s Today on Thursday. “We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects. We wish the best for each other and one another’s children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support.”

The news of their split comes after reports about the status of their relationship that widely circulated in March. Among the reports, Page Six had posted a story claiming that the couple had called off their engagement and broken up. “We are working through some things,” the couple said in a statement to People on March 13 in response. “All the reports are inaccurate,” they additionally told The Associated Press at the time.

Lopez, 51, and former Yankees player Rodriguez, 45, became engaged in late 2019 after dating for two years. At the time, they shared the news on Instagram along with a series of beachside getaway pictures.

In April of last year, Rodriguez told Jimmy Fallon, in an episode of The Tonight Show, that their wedding was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We have to go with the flow now,” Rodriguez said at the time. “Everything is fluid. Everything has been just on a pause. We just want to make sure we think safety first to make sure all the little ones are all in a good place.”

Neither Lopez nor Rodriquez have yet addressed the status of their relationship on their social media accounts. Recent posts from Lopez have shown the star solo and without her engagement ring, fueling recent speculation. In late February they had each shared photos together from the Dominican Republic where Lopez is filming the Lionsgate romantic action-comedy Shotgun Wedding, in which Armie Hammer was recently replaced with Josh Duhamel.
